The Case for Local Manufacturing in African Hospitality

Importing every physical component of hospitality is not a sustainable development model for a continent building at scale.

JHG Perspectives · September 2026

Hotel development across Africa frequently depends on international supply chains.

In many cases that is necessary. Certain equipment, technology, specialist finishes and certified products may need to come from established international manufacturers.

But treating importation as the default solution for everything creates its own risks: cost, lead time, currency, replacement, maintenance, customisation and eventually dependence.

Hospitality requires enormous physical infrastructure

Beds. Wardrobes. Desks. Doors. Vanities. Restaurant furniture. Banquettes. Joinery. Public-area furniture. Outdoor furniture. Operational equipment. Guestroom accessories.

Hospitality is a highly physical industry. If hotel development increases while manufacturing capability remains weak, a growing share of project capital leaves the market through imports.

There is an opportunity to change that.

Local production improves responsiveness

Hotels are rarely static. Furniture gets damaged. Rooms change. Restaurants are repositioned. Additional items are required.

A local manufacturing relationship can respond more quickly than an international procurement cycle. That creates value long after initial construction.

Design standards still matter

Local manufacturing should never be used as an excuse for lower standards. The opportunity is precisely the opposite.

International design. Engineering. Machinery. Quality control. Materials knowledge. Production discipline. Combined with local capability.

The objective should be to manufacture closer to demand while maintaining the standards hospitality projects require.

Not everything should be local

Intelligent procurement is not ideological.

Some products are better imported. Some are better manufactured locally. Some require hybrid assembly. The project should determine the sourcing strategy.

The goal is not simply to replace imports. It is to build a smarter supply chain.

Manufacturing also develops capability

Factories create knowledge: machine operators, upholsterers, joiners, designers, production planners, quality specialists and installation teams.

As this capability grows, it can serve industries beyond hospitality. Hotels can therefore become an important source of demand for broader manufacturing development.

For developers, this can improve cost control, lead times, replacement capability and customisation. For the wider economy, it creates something equally important: productive capability.
